Hookworms - Form and Function

This band, Hookworms, has a similar sound to Neg Peg with less distortion and more lyrics. They also have a very similar video style. In the opening of Form and Function, there is a lot of Egyptian imagery, similar to that which Neg Peg availed of in their video of Floating Omen. Though Neg Peg put more of a modern religious aspect on it while Hookworms seem to focus on ancient worship. There is also a similar colour scheme with a lot of pinks and reds in both videos. There is much more focus on vocals in this song than Neg Peg have in Floating Omen, or any of their songs. The use of effects is also very similar to Neg Peg's videos who also overlay different clips on top of each other to blend everything together. However in this video the setting and mise en scene are much more visible which perhaps shows a more distinct desire to tell a story rather than leave it up to interpretation as Neg Peg do.

The scene at 1:32 shows a woman walking backwards, possibly just by playing the footage backwards to achieve an eerie feeling that Neg Peg achieves through vocals. A similar effect was used in Carrie, the 1979 movie, there was a scene with a girl walking towards the camera. They had her walk backwards away from the camera and then played it backwards to achieve the eerie feel. I will include a video below, the scene occurs at 0:23. This video seems much more focused on history than that of Neg Peg which to me seemed more interested in provoking a response from the audience and making them find their own interpretation of what they are watching. Hookworm frequently use a mirroring effect which heightens the psychedelic nature of the video. Neg Peg also go for a psychedelic effect but use vocal echoes and overlaying more images into their videos which also gives the videos a confusing aspect.

The video for Form and Function gives an impression of time passing whereas in the Neg Peg video, while there was a sense of time, it was more a sense of how much time has passed rather than how fast time is passing as is the impression that I'm getting from Form and Function. At 3:44 the video clips being used are sped up. This contrasts with the Neg Peg video in which everything seemed to be moving slower than normal. Around 4:25, the colour scheme changes to purple rather than red. This lends credit to my earlier idea that Hookworms were more focused on narrative than Neg Peg. The colour shift represents a change in the tone of the video. Neg Peg never really had a change in their tone and the colour scheme was consistent throughout the video. At 4:28 there is some mirrored text on screen. The use an almost archaic looking font, perhaps due to the words being 'prepares potion'. The mirror effect could be used to subtly suggest that throughout time nothing really changes. This is slightly different from Neg Peg who used a modern looking font and had the colours of the text flashing, perhaps saying that things are constantly changing.

In conclusion I think that while these two bands have very similar styles and sounds, they are trying to convey different messages and have a different artistic identity as a band.
