Final Feedback from Small Town America Label Manager

So random but only in the best of ways! I am blown away by the talent displayed here! I certainly wasn't this impressive at that age!

Evaluation

The digipak has now been fully completed and I will insert a link here

I think that it has turned out fantastically well and really reflects the vibe of the music and of the band themselves. We used the same graphics, ie tarot cards and the mask, in the digipak that we used in the video. I feel that this really cements the connection between the two in the mind of the audience.

The above is a link to the website we developed to promote the band. Our photos are already added and we will add the video once it is finished. We went with dark colours to better reflect the band and the video itself.

Update 27

We've got the photos shot. We did a few in various situations. I'll post my favourites below.

Update 26

We have now finished editing, though there is still some final rough edges to smooth out. We are planning on taking the photos for the website this week. I'm quite looking forward to see how they will turn out.

We are thinking of something along the lines of the above photo. The black and white in particular should work well with the band's image and the website. We do plan on parodying the Beatles though, just for fun.

Update 25

Editing is getting close to being finished. The website is ready to go, all we need is a couple of photos to put in and obviously the video to embed. Hopefully this will be completed soon.

Update 24

We are moving through editing on schedule. I have begun working on a logo for the back cover of the digipak. I will show this below. Jim is working on the website that we are making to promote the band. So far it is looking good but we do need some images to put up. Chris hasn't been able to send us any so we are considering just dressing indie and taking some ourselves.

Update 23

We are continuing to work on with editing the video. At the moment it's slow going, but once we have all of the clips we need in a general sort of order we can really get cracking with effects, timing and filters.

Update 22

We noticed that there was an issue with the fisherman scene. The only problem is that we forgot to put the line on the rod. This is only visible during one shot but it's so simple to redo that we have decided to reshoot it. This will add to the realism of the piece.

Update 21

We finished the filming today. Finally done! The footage looks great, especially the ritual footage. The dusk atmosphere worked really well for us and I can't wait to see the finished product.

Update 20

This weekend we are going to be filming the final scenes of our piece. We have already started editing it together we just need the final couple of pieces. Tomorrow afternoon we are going to film the fisherman scene. This will probably take an hour or so. Then we will wait for dusk to do the ritual scene.

Update 19

Today we filmed the forest scenes. This included the ritual leader leaving the box in the forest. The hunter finding the box, the hunter throwing the box away and the 70s guy burying himself with the box. We intentionally used the same location for all of these to try to get across the cyclical nature of the box and life itself. We also intend to use the same location for the ritual, the fisherman scene and the 70s guy finding the box for the same reason. This way we go from the beach then to the forest then back to the beach then back to the forest again.

Update 18

Tonight we are going to begin filming. We have secured an empty house to film in, which Adam of Sunny with a Chance of Riot was nice enough to let us use. We are filming the 70s scene tonight, with Joel in full costume. Joel is going to bring a large halogen light and I'm going to bring a small inspection light just to be sure. Joel will drive Jim and JJ to Crumlin and I'll meet them with Adam and they can follow us back to Adam's house. If all goes to plan the footage should look great.

Update 17

Today we our continuing with our preparations to begin shooting within the next week. We have decided on locations and actors and our in the process of gathering up costumes and props, which Jim and JJ are working on. I'm continuing on with the shooting scripts for us to follow when we are shooting. This will help us work efficiently and quickly.

Update 16

We have heard back from the band in regards to our final idea, that of the box with the ritual at the start. It got a positive response so we are moving forward. The storyboard is already complete, as is the animatic. From here we need to write a shooting script and then we can begin filming.

Analysis of Video Examples from OKS

Recently we have been in communication with the band. Our Krypton Son have given us their take on their own creative process and sent through a couple of examples of what they want the video to be inspired by:

One -  This video is one of Our Krypton Son's fellow Small Town America band, More Than Conquerors. This was a video that MTH made themselves and it is very simple. However there is a beauty to this simplicity and it is really quite effective. The video is largely text based and OKS have said that they would like some text incorporated into their video, using the lyrics of Ill Wind. I don't believe that they want something fully text based as this video is but likely more with text animations over the video, perhaps for the most shocking lines such as the last.

Two - This video is from artist Ryan Hemsworth, and it is heavily animated. It is an incredibly strange and abstract video and there is no real narrative, the video only serves to heighten the impact of the song. I don't think that we could animate anything close to this level as none of us have any skill with drawing, stick figures is about our limit. However I don't think that the video needs to be fully animated. I think that OKS would be happy with using animation to highlight or contrast certain sections of the video, perhaps in a freeze frame or something similar.

Three - This video is from the band Wilco, and features no real narrative instead using thousands of pictures and cuts with practically every new note. There is some footage of the band however. It seems to have an almost home-movie quality or a tribute to the band.

Currently we are still spitballing new ideas but I think we are getting close, we're deciding between two at the moment, the door idea and the box idea. My personal choice would be the box idea as I think this to be a darker and more abstract idea.

We heard back from Our Krypton Son. They have tried to point us in the right direction as to what they want out of the video. They want it darker and more abstract. I have tried to come up with some ideas to accomplish this. Nothing has been decided yet. Once we get another idea we like we'll send it off o the band again and go from there.

I am finishing the storyboard for the live production idea. JJ and Jim finished the animatic for the kid idea. JJ has begun work on an animatic for the live production while Jim is starting the storyboard for the dance idea. Joel is looking into ways that we could make a cheap shoulder mount for the camera to make filming easier and more efficient.

Update 12

I am working on a storyboard for our live production idea. We finished the storyboard for the kid idea and Jim and JJ are currently working on building that into an animatic. We still have one more idea to storyboard which is the dance idea. We are also still waiting to hear back from Our Krypton Son.

Update 11

Today the group watched instructional videos on the pre-production stage, found by Joel. They were made by FilmRiot. I will include them below. We are going to begin storyboarding our ideas while we wait to hear back from the band and hopefully we'll be ahead of schedule then.

Update 10

We have now sent the prezi, containing our ideas, plans, inspirations, heart and soul to the band. Now we wait to see what they think of it. From there we will hopefully get some input from them and go from there. If they like one of our ideas then we will begin storyboarding and get filming pretty quickly.

Elbow

This, of all the songs and videos I've come across in my research, sounds the most like Ill Wind by Our Krypton Son. Elbow are a slightly heavier band but they manage the same rustic, country vibe that Chris from Our Krypton Son is always aiming for. Elbow also have an extremely indie sound that I think Chris will identify with.

This video is heavily focused on the band and their performance. If we were to use this method of filming then we would need to spend at least a day filming with the band to ensure that we get all of the shots that we need.

Those listening to OKS on Youtube seem to be fans of indie bands and also seem to be very loyal to their chosen band as they seem to buy the albums as soon as they come out. The comments are also always asking the band for updates on when new material will be out or when they will be on tour.

Update 9

We have finished the prezi and it is ready to be sent off to the band. This means that we should begin shooting the video soon. The band will hopefully get back to us with whichever of our ideas that they prefer and will begin storyboarding from there.

Update 8

We are now putting the finishing touches on the prezi that we are going to be sending to Our Krypton Son to pitch our ideas to them. We also included our influences and what we think they might like in the way of similar album covers. We wrote up three ideas and we have one in mind that we would rather do but we'll see which one the band chooses. Once the prezi is finished we will be delving into research on our target audience so that we can make the music video specific to that group or groups.
